Changes to VAT Registration Changes

At Hall Morrice, we prioritise keeping our clients informed about crucial updates that impact their business operations. Today, we are highlighting an important change announced by HMRC regarding the process for updating VAT registration details.

Effective from Monday 5 August 2024, any requests to change your VAT registration details must be made through your VAT online account. This new digital process replaces the previously accepted VAT484 form and other postal or electronic methods.

Why the Change?

HMRC's move to a fully digital process aims to:

  • Enhance Security - Digital submissions are more secure, reducing the risk of errors and fraud.
  • Increase Efficiency - The online account provides a quicker way to process changes, helping businesses avoid unnecessary delays.
  • Streamline Services - Simplifying the process helps HMRC manage and process requests more effectively.

What You Need to Do

To update your VAT registration details:

1. Log in to your VAT online account.

2. Submit the changes directly through the digital portal.

Support for Non-Digital Users

HMRC acknowledges that not all businesses can access digital services. If you are digitally excluded or need assistance, HMRC offers several support options:

  • Phone Support - Call HMRC for assistance with your VAT registration changes.
  • 'Needs Extra Support' Service - This service is designed to help those who require additional help with digital services.
  • VAT484 Form Requests - For specific cases, such as taking over someone else’s VAT responsibilities, you can still request a VAT484 form by contacting HMRC directly.

Updated Guidance

Comprehensive guidance on how to change your VAT registration details using the new process is now available on the HMRC website. We recommend reviewing this guidance to ensure you are familiar with the updated procedures.
